The town of Deal lies on the English
Channel eight miles north-east of Dover. Its attractive mix
of unspoilt seafront, delightful conservation area, small
fishing fleet and vibrant High Street and shopping area make
it one of the gems of the East Kent coast.
Closely associated with Deal is the large
mainly residential parish of Walmer where Julius Caesar first
arrived in Britain. Deal was named as a "limb" of
the Cinque Ports in 1278 and, thanks to its position on "The
Downs" safe anchorage, the town was once the busiest
port in England.
Today, the quiet seaside resort offers much
to enjoy. Two fascinating museums, Henry VIII's Deal Castle,
Kent's only remaining public pier, a small theatre, an indoor
swimming pool, plenty of places to wine and dine and, on a
fine day, a clear view of the French coast - less than 25
miles away.
