Over the years, Deal has had three piers. The original one was built in 1838 by Sir John Rennie. A wooden structure, it was replaced in 1864 by an iron pier, following destruction in a winter gale. This survived until January 1940 when a crippled Dutch freighter caused serious damage. Its replacement - the present concrete pier - was officially opened by Prince Philip in 1957. It remains an extremely popular venue for anglers and visitors, many of whom stroll the length of the pier to eat in the pierhead's Goodwins Cafe and admire splendid views of Deal's seafront.
