Angling

The shoreline at Deal and Walmer and the pier at Deal are immensely popular locations for sea anglers, whilst Cottington Lakes at Sholden on the northern outskirts of Deal offer some of the finest coarse and river fishing in the region.

Where to fish

Deal Pier
A popular place to fish with benches lining the length of the pier as well as a number of shelters and access for wheelchairs. According to local anglers, fishing for mackerel, garfish, mullet, pollack and sole is popular in summer. In winter, whiting and codling tend to make up the bulk of catches.

The Beach
Fishing is possible along most of the beach from the remains of Sandown Castle on the north of Deal to Kingsdown in the south. Much of the beach is steeply banked pebbles going onto sand.
The groynes on the section of beach between Deal Pier and Sandown Castle are said to be a good place to fish for sole, flounder and school bass in summer; whiting, codling and dabs in winter; and pout throughout the year - especially in the last hour of ebb and and the first hour of flood tides.
