COUNCIL TAX FOR THE COMING 12 MONTHS

Dover District Council has agreed local Council Tax for the coming financial year which starts in April.

The average total bill for a Band D property in Dover district for 2019/20 will be £1,822.82, an increase of 5.52% on the 2018/19 bill. The money is collected by the district council and includes sums for:

  • Kent County Council (£1,299.42),
  • Dover District Council (£187.29),
  • Kent Police and Crime Commissioner (£193.15),
  • Kent and Medway Fire and Rescue Authority (£77.76) and
  • the district's town and parish councils (an average of £65.20).

Remember, the above figures are the average for a Band D property. For details of the new council tax charges for properties in Bands A to H in each parish/town area, see Dover District Council's website.   (March 30, 2019)

JUNE DATE FOR GOODWIN SANDS HIGH COURT REVIEW

Campaigners against plans by the Port of Dover to dredge the Goodwin Sand are now preparing for a High Court hearing in June. It takes the form of a judicial review of the Marine Management Organisation's decision to allow the dredging and will be at the London court on Wednesday 5 June.

The pressure group Goodwin Sands SOS fear removing the sands will disturb war graves and damage the environment. They say that the government's Marine Management Organisation's permission, given last July, failed to consider the impact of the physical removal of the volume of sand from a designated ‘protected feature’ in a proposed Marine Conservation Zone and only considered the impact of removing the surface area of the subtidal sand.

The Port of Dover needs to use the some of the sands in the Channel off Deal in its redevelopment of Dover Western Docks. It maintains the dredging involves removing three million tonnes of aggregate - some 0.22% of the sandbanks. Aquiring material from further afield would have a serious impact on the cost of the scheme.   (March 29, 2019)

PLANS FOR FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO DEAL PIER

New lighting and a range of refurbishments feature in a £600,000 second phase of renovations for Deal Pier proposed by Dover District Council. The first phase of works, costing £500,000 and carried out last year, included new pier seating, walkway surfacing, repainting the metalwork, renewing the gas main and refurbishing the pumped drainage system. Repairs to the pier's lower deck are also nearing completion.

The latest plans include work to refurbish the clock and art sculpture above the pier entrance, installation of an electronic public information screen showcasing Deal and the area, and new energy-saving lighting. The pier shelters are included in general painting and repairs, together with installation of an electronic visitor counter, replacing the CCTV system and essential repairs to the pier structure.

The council's Cabinet is considering the scheme at its meeting on Monday 4 February and, if approved, it is expected the works will take place during the next financial year. For more, see: Dover DC Press-Release.   (February 3, 2019)

NEW LEISURE CENTRE AT WHITFIELD OPENS ON 25 FEBRUARY

The new Dover District Leisure Centre is to open to the public at 9am on Monday 25 February. Builders, BAM Construction, are due to handover the building on time and on budget to Dover District Council and operators Places Leisure on Friday 15 February.

The existing Dover Leisure Centre on Townwall Street will close at 5pm on Sunday 17 February to allow for the transfer to the new leisure centre and for staff training at the new facility in Whitfield.

The £26m Dover District Leisure Centre features the first swimming pool in Kent to be purpose-built to Sport England specifications for a county standard competition swimming pool. The 25m x 17m eight-lane pool includes starting blocks, timing pads, and an electronic scoreboard. With spectator seating for 250 people, Dover is expected to be a major venue for swimming galas. The 15m x 8.5m learner pool, which features a moveable floor to vary the depth, can also be used as a warm-up/down facility for competitive swimming.

Dry-side facilities at the new leisure centre include a four-court sports hall; clip ‘n' climb interactive climbing arena; 120-station fitness suite; two multi-activity studios; spin studio; two glass-backed squash courts with spectator seating; two outdoor five-a-side 3G pitches; sauna and steam room, café, and 250 parking spaces.   (February 3, 2019)
