JUNE DATE FOR GOODWIN SANDS HIGH COURT REVIEW Campaigners against plans by the Port of Dover to dredge the Goodwin Sand are now preparing for a High Court hearing in June. It takes the form of a judicial review of the Marine Management Organisation's decision to allow the dredging and will be at the London court on Wednesday 5 June. The pressure group Goodwin Sands SOS fear removing the sands will disturb war graves and damage the environment. They say that the government's Marine Management Organisation's permission, given last July, failed to consider the impact of the physical removal of the volume of sand from a designated protected feature in a proposed Marine Conservation Zone and only considered the impact of removing the surface area of the subtidal sand. The Port of Dover needs to use the some of the sands in the Channel off Deal in its redevelopment of Dover Western Docks. It maintains the dredging involves removing three million tonnes of aggregate - some 0.22% of the sandbanks. Aquiring material from further afield would have a serious impact on the cost of the scheme. (March 29, 2019) |

PLANS
FOR FURTHER IMPROVEMENTS TO DEAL PIER
New lighting and a range of refurbishments feature in a £600,000 second phase of renovations for Deal Pier proposed by Dover District Council. The first phase of works, costing £500,000 and carried out last year, included new pier seating, walkway surfacing, repainting the metalwork, renewing the gas main and refurbishing the pumped drainage system. Repairs to the pier's lower deck are also nearing completion. The latest plans include work to refurbish the clock and art sculpture above the pier entrance, installation of an electronic public information screen showcasing Deal and the area, and new energy-saving lighting. The pier shelters are included in general painting and repairs, together with installation of an electronic visitor counter, replacing the CCTV system and essential repairs to the pier structure. The council's Cabinet is considering the scheme at its meeting on Monday 4 February and, if approved, it is expected the works will take place during the next financial year.
