SECOND LADY MEMBER FOR LOCAL ROTARY

If you thought Rotary clubs were an "all-male" preserve, Nicola Fairhurst from St Margaret's-at-Cliffe can prove you wrong. Nicola, a manager in the commercial department of Tersons in Dover, has just become a member of the Rotary Club of South Foreland. In fact, she has been a Rotarian for two years, originally joining the Folkestone Rotary Club when her job was based in Hythe. On moving to Dover, she found it difficult to attend regular meetings and decided to join the South Foreland group.

Nicola was formally welcomed by retiring club president Andrew Eberlein in a ceremony on Wednesday, 20 June. She becomes the second lady member of the local club.    (June 25, 2007)

The local Regatta Association will receive £400 to help with it Teddy Bears Picnic family event in Regatta and Carnival Week. Deal and Walmer Handelian Society gets £350 to help in staging a local Choral and Orchestral concert of Handel's anthems.   (June 14, 2007)

WALMER'S NEW LIFEBOATS

Walmer Lifeboat Station's two new vessels - the Atlantic 85 lifeboat Donald McLaughlan and the D-class lifeboat Duggie Rodbard - were officially handed over and blessed in a ceremony attended by Admiral The Lord Boyce, the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, on Saturday, 5 May. Gerry Costa went along with his camera and these are some of his shots of the ceremony and the new lifeboat in action.   (May 8, 2007)

FAIRTRADE INVITATION

Deal Town Council has invited Walmer Parish Council to be represented on its recently formed Fairtrade Working Group. The group's aim is to make Deal a "Fairtrade Town" by encouraging everyone to seek out goods that give a better deal to Third World producers and also to favour local produce when shopping. Walmer councillors will consider the idea when they meet on Wednesday, 9 May.   (May 6, 2007)

SAFER BUS STOP

Things could be much safer for pedestrians and bus users at the top end of Dover Road in the near future. Following discussions with Walmer Parish Council, Stagecoach and Kent Highways have agreed to relocate a bus stop - currently awkward to reach and with a very limited standing area set into the grass verge - to the pavement near the junction with Downlands.

Kent Highways have also agreed a new pedestrian crossing point on the Dover Road just south of Downlands would be desirable. Initial designs for a scheme have been drawn up. The start of any works now depends on funds becoming available.   (May 6, 2007)

CLEAN UP CAMPAIGN IN PROSPECT

Concerns at the amount of litter in Deal and Walmer could result in a joint campaign by the local parish and town councils. The problem was discussed at a joint meeting of the Walmer, Deal and Great Mongeham councils in mid April. Councillors agreed that their three chairmen should work together to come up with a joint approach. Possible ideas could include adding more litter bins, using police community support officers to impose on-the-spot fines, employing a litter picker, a telephone hot line for the public to report problems and a local awareness campaign.   (May 6, 2007)

DOVER ROAD PAVEMENT WORK

Kent Highways is planning to carry out resurfacing on pavements along the western side of Dover Road between Cornwall Road and Canada Road in June. The work is due to start on Monday, 11 June and will take about two weeks.   (May 6, 2007)

EARLY MORNING "QUAKE-UP" CALL!

Walmer residents felt the effects of an earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale when it struck East Kent at 8.18am on Saturday (28 April). According to the British Geological Survey, the source of the quake was five kilometers beneath the Channel seabed, some 14km south of Dover.

Although Walmer and Deal appear to have escaped with little or no damage, a number of streets in Folkestone suffered badly. Dozens of families had to leave their homes and it is feared some properties will have to be demolished.   (May 2, 2007)

IT'S "NO CONTEST" FOR WALMER PARISH

Walmer residents won't need to vote for their parish councillors on Thursday, 3 May. The numbers of candidates exactly match the number of available seats in three of Walmer Parish Council's four wards. And in the remaining ward only four candidates put up for the five available seats. So the 14 candidates will be automatically elected and the vacant seat - for Upper Walmer - will probably be filled by co-option.

The new parish council line-up is as follows:

Gladstone Ward: Vanessa Ann Harrison and Roger Hobbs

Lower Walmer, St Saviour's Ward: Michael Charles Gosling (Independent), Margaret Jane Johnson (Conservative), Margaret Ludwig (Independent) and David Frederick Skinner (Independent).

Lower Walmer, Wellington Ward: Paul Dawkins (Independent), Roger Ernest Evans, Sue Le Chevalier (Conservative) and Derek Peter Murphy.

Upper Walmer Ward: Leslie Frank Alton (Independent), Clive Alexander Grant, Pat Heath (Conservative) and Christine Paula Orridge (Independent). There is one vacancy.   (April 17, 2007)

CHANCE TO PROMOTE YOUR SOCIETY

There's an opportunity for local clubs and voluntary groups to promote their activities at the annual Walmer Green Picnic on Saturday, 18 August. A few free places where organisations can mount a static display are still available. For more details contact Walmer Parish Council on 01304 381506.   (April 13, 2007)

TELL US ABOUT RECENT HISTORY

There's a new section on WalmerWeb designed to gather up local people's reminiscences about life and events in Walmer and Deal within living memory. Very often this type of record is lost when people move away or, sadly, die.

If you have memories of past events or personalities - maybe connected with local industries such as mining or fishing, your schooldays, possibly about the armed services or wartime incidents.... then please consider sharing them. To see more, go to the "Times Remembered" page.   (April 13, 2007)

DISTRICT ELECTION LINE-UP

Details of candidates standing in the Dover District Council elections on Thursday, 3 May have been announced.

For the three seats in Walmer Ward, they are: Ernie Brimmell (Labour), David Fillingham (Labour), Pat Heath (Conservative), Paul Le Chevalier (Conservative), Deryck Murray (Labour) and Kit Smith (Conservative).

For more information on how and where to vote, see the Dover Council website.  (April 13, 2007)

PLANNING CHANGE

There's an important change of venue for some of Walmer Parish Council's Planning Committee meetings. In future, all planning meetings will be held at Elizabeth House, St Mary's Road, Walmer. The Council says the decision should help provide more space for people to attend and also overcome the problems some had in negotiating the stairs for those meetings held at the parish office. Details of dates and times of Parish Council meetings are included in the WalmerWeb coming events listings.    (March 7, 2007)

"WALMER IN BLOOM" RETURNS

Now that Southern Water has lifted its hosepipe ban, Walmer parish councillors have decided to revive the Walmer in Bloom campaign for 2007. This means that the hanging baskets in The Strand and the floor-standing planters at a number of locations will all be brightening up the street scene. Also back are the schools' poster competition and the garden best garden display awards for residents. The Council will be publicising full details shortly.   (March 7, 2007)

WALKERS NEEDED FOR CHARITY WALK

Participants are needed for a sponsored walk to raise funds for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer Charity. Scheduled for Saturday, 7 April, the route is from Walmer Castle to St Margaret's and a free buffet at the Hope Inn, followed by a return to Walmer Castle along the clifftop. For details, call Kerry Rubins on 01304 379176.    (March 2, 2007)

CHANGES TO "BLACK BOX" RECYCLING SCHEME

The inclusion of more households in Dover Council's black box recycling scheme means that collection days for some existing users will change. Details of the service have been sent to all premises included in the kerbside collections. It's also possible to check collection dates for your road on Dover Council's website at www.dover.gov.uk.    (March 2, 2007)

BEACH "SPRING CLEAN"

People are being invited to join in an annual community event to gather litter and tidy up Deal beach. This year's "Spring Clean" is on Sunday, 11 March - starting at 9.30am at the entrance to Deal Pier.    (March 2, 2007)

BAND DATES

If you are into band music, you may want to take a look at the WalmerWeb Forum's "coming events" section. There, you'll find details of the 18th Charity All Stars Band Concert by former members of the Royal Marines Band Service at the Winter Gardens, Margate on Sunday, 11 March and also a concert with the Railway Swing Band, organised by the Rotary Club of Deal at the Astor Theatre, Deal on Wednesday, 21 March.

Local promoter Stephen Misson has spotted the opportunity to use the Forum to spread the word about the concerts and advise people on how to get tickets. He's also got a Race Night up his sleeve - and, again, details are on the Forum.

If you've also got an event to publicise, the Forum offers a great place to go into much more detail than is possible in WalmerWeb's month-by-month events listings. And it's "instant"; you don't have to wait for the webmaster to add your information. To see the Forum, click here.    (February 10, 2007)

NEW WEBSITE FOR LOCAL PROSTATE CANCER GROUP

The Canterbury branch of the Prostate Cancer Support Association has just launched its own website. The group, which started in January 2006, covers much of east Kent including Walmer and Deal and provides information and fellowship for men (and any carers) living with this problem. Members meet at 10.15am on the last Wednesday of the month in the Centre for Health and Clinical Sciences at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital.

The group's secretary is Mr Graham Edwards from Deal and its treasurer and webmaster is Mr Gerry Costa from Walmer, so there is plenty of local involvement. To see their website, go to: www.psacanterbury.org.uk.    (February 1, 2007)

£400 REWARD TO CATCH SEAT WRECKERS

A £400 reward has been offered to help catch the people who wrecked a memorial seat at Marke Wood recreation ground, Walmer. The seat was in memory of Deal footballer Gary Goldsmith who died in 2001. Anyone with information on the culprits can contact the police on 01304 240055 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 (freephone).    (January 29, 2007)

GALES TAKE THEIR TOLL

Powerful gales on Thursday, 18 January demolished Dover Council's indoor tennis centre at Victoria Park, Deal. The pre-fabricated building was opened in 1987 and suffered damage in that year's October "hurricane". The district council is now considering how best to restore the tennis facility.

Much of the Walmer and Deal area escaped the worst of the storm thanks to being in the lea of the cliffs at St Margaret's and Kingsdown. However, Deal Pier was closed throughout the Thursday morning as a safety precaution. And motorists on the A258 between Dover and Walmer faced slow detours on rural lanes when a tree and power lines blocked the main road mid afternoon.    (January 29, 2007)
