Putting on a Show

Some of the programmes for 8th Lambeth group shows in the 1950s...

The 8th Lambeth Scouts present "OUR SHOW" on
May 1 and 2, 1953 to raise money for their camping fund.

Stan Allen raked around in the attic and came up with these tickets for the May 1953 Group Show....
Show ticket for 1 May 1953 Show ticket for 2 May 1953
And look what you missed if you didn't buy one of those tickets! A rousing chorus to the tune of the"Much Binding in the Marsh" theme...

The 8th scouts in Halstead Street
Are here to keep you happy and contented.
The 8th scouts in Halstead Street
We do not own this hall, we only rent it.
We meet here in mid week we're as busy as can be
With wash your face, comb your hair and scrub those dirty knees
And if you're getting worried, there is no need to be
The 8th scouts in Halstead Street.

It gets worse! Here's another song from an 8th Lambeth Show...
The Scoutmaster’s Blues
Here the lyrics are by Stan Allen, to the tune of "Lilly Marlene".

CHORUS
Our Scouters how we love them
The Scouters of the Eighth

1. In charge of all our Scout Boys we have a Mr State
He gets the boys to join us by using girls as bait
He says that we have plenty of girls so blonde and fair
And if you don’t believe us, just look right over there
CHORUS

2. In charge of all the seniors we have a bearded man
His wife they call Akela, they say his name is Sam
But don’t be mistaken and don’t be misled
We found his birth certificate and know his name is Fred
CHORUS

3. At the head of all our little ones we’ve got our OMA
And if by chance you cross him by gad you’ll rue the day
It isn’t here in Brixton you see him on his beat
You’ll find he works in Batt’sea and knows most every street
CHORUS

4. In charge of all our Wolf cubs we have our Akela
To help her in her troubles are Kim and Bargeerha
We also have a Rikki and a great big lofty Kaa
But he can’t start his engine so won’t get very far
CHORUS

5. They say that meat is scarce now but come along with us
We have a Busty Fleming who’d fill up any bus
We had a boy called Wilson, his mother kept him tidy
That is upon a Wednesday but never on a Friday
CHORUS

6. There is a scout called greenhorn, who’s almost second class
By greenhorn we mean Mariner, at running he’s quite fast
But he is so much faster when he is being chased
By OMA, or Michael or even Mr State
CHORUS

7. Our Reg is in the Air Force he’s not a little erk
He’s a Radar Mac, walks round and doesn’t work
We’ve got another copper, you haven’t met him yet
We always call him Dusty, he’s the tallest we could get
CHORUS

8. We’ve not forgot the Vicar who’s name is Mr Flacke
He only sees us once a month, we all sit at the back
And what about Miss Hayter who gives us lovely fires
Plus Ida, Dot and Vera, their help our Skip admires
CHORUS

The 8th Lambeth Scouts present
"THE GROUP SHOW"on May 7 and 8, 1954.

One of the items in this show featured the four Saxby brothers who were persuaded to burst into song. The lyrics are here...

Singalong With The Saxbys
The spotlight turned on the four Saxby brothers - David, Maurice, Michael and Peter - for one of the musical items in an 8th Lambeth Group Show.
Lyrics (we believe) by Stan Allen to the tune of "The Church’s One Foundation".

1. We are the four young Saxbys
A handsome lot are we
The only time you see us
Is breakfast, dinner and tea
When our mother calls us
We shout with all our might
We live above a bakery
Blow you Jack we’re all right

2. My name is Peter Saxby
I am a little cub
When I go home on Wednesday
My Mum gives me a scrub
She says that I’m a scruffy un
From my neck down to my knees
Akela calls me ruffian
Don’t take the Mickey please

3. My name is Michael Saxby
I’m the nicest you can see
If there’s any work to do
They always pick on me
When mother wants a job done
And father wants one too
I’ve got the perfect answer
You know what you can do

4. My name is Maurice Saxby
I’m a devil for the girls
I walk around in nice blue suits
My hair all done in curls
And when I sit around the house
I haven’t got a care
Until my mother calls me
And then I’m just not there

5. My name is David Saxby
I’m the biggest of the bunch
The only time you see me
Is breakfast, tea and lunch
It’s not that I like eating
I merely like to stuff
We’ve only one more verse to go
We think you’ve had enough

6. We are the four young Saxbys
A handsome lot are we
The only time you see us
Is breakfast, dinner and tea
When our mother calls us
We shout with all our might
We live above a bakery
Blow you Jack we’re all right
