Swamplanders Revisited
Senior Scout Magazines: 4 (circa March 1957) and ? (???)
Extracts from the Senior Scout Magazine Vol 4 (Leader Ron and Editor Stan)

On Wednesday 13th February 1957, I went to the Senior Scout Meeting of the District in Langton Hall. I was under the impression that we had more Seniors in the 8th than those that attended. More so, as it was a very special occasion for the 8th.

I must now record that T/L Alan Willis received from the ACC Mr Upton, his Queen's Certificate. At the same meeting R. Hay, received his Fireman's Badge. I had other badges with me to be presented but the winners were not present.

Now, as to the meeting. There was a debate on two subjects: for and against the Primus stove; and for and against the antiquated scout clothing.

On the first, the subject was openly debated and fairly put forward as this is one of those subjects that you can really be for and against, the main theme being that it is useful under special circumstances when other types of fires in camp are not possible. The second subject, the speaker against the motion was requested to do something that he did not believe in. He did a good job but it was obvious that he was to lose the motion.

After this the Scouters present formed a panel and questions were put to them. I think this would have been the best part but time beat us all.

One thing, the tea was cold. The arrangements for such an occasion could be improved. Our motto is "Be Prepared", but I do not see why we should be prepared for cold tea.

Report and Comment
by T. Noakes

A HAT WEEK? Was quite a success.
The debate on PUBLIC SCHOOLS was very good indeed. Mick State stirred us all with some extremely heartfelt comments like: "What I want to know is why the Grammar Schools won't plays us at football". If we exclude subjects like women, these "HAT" weeks can become very good, even if you don't know about cameras, electricity or women.

WANTED. Football for handball (not too hard).

Wanted: Any humour for next bulletin as I cannot think of anything.

FLASH: Reg Allen (junior) is hoping to become a father in the near future. I'm sure we wish him the very best of luck.

ANY SUGGESTIONS for new items to be included on Wednesday evenings will help to make that evening more enjoyable. (Darts do become a bit tiresome. The opposite sex is, of course, excluded. Who said "PITY"? All right, all right, I give up.)

P.S. It was very nice to see John Champion.

Extract from the Senior Scout Magazine Vol ? (unfortunately the cover is missing, so your guess
is as good as ours! Seems possible, though, that it was issued around January 1958.)    The Editor was Stan.

Editorial

A Christmas good turn, consisting of a recital of skiffle music to the boys in the home at Tulse Hill was performed by one of our skiffle groups. The other is performing at the Church's Christmas Dinner on Jan 4th.

Christmas cards were sent on behalf of the Troop to the Vicar, Col Vesey at Twyford, Mr Bill Garrett and Miss Hayter.

Subscriptions are now due for the months of November/December. Half crowns to Stan, if you please. With 20 members of the Senior troop we should have an income of almost three pounds per month - it isn't.

Wishing a Happy New Year to both my readers.
