Hall Place, in the south-east
part of Otterden parish was once a significant manor. According
to one source, early owners included a Roger Rey and, later,
a Thomas Franklyn, who is said to have paid a yearly rent of
one red rose.
By the time of Henry VII (1485-1509),
Hall Place was no longer a manor and had become the property
of a Mr Locke.
He sold it to a John Bunce, whose only
son, James, died in 1606 and was buried in the south chancel
of the church.
His eldest son, Simon, became his heir.
He died in 1611 leaving it to Anne, his only daughter, who was
married to a William Brockman (the son and heir of a Henry Brockman
of Newington, near Hythe).
